Traveling with kids can be a daunting task, but with the right preparation and mindset, it can also be a rewarding experience for the whole family. We love to travel and exposing our kids to travel early on has really helped them understand how to behave on travel days, and they really look forward to our trips. We have done a few long road trips but most of our travel involves flying.
What are the best ways to keep kids entertained during travel?
One of the key challenges of traveling with kids is keeping them entertained during long journeys. Pack a variety of activities such as coloring books, puzzles, and small toys to keep them occupied. Consider downloading their favorite movies or games on a tablet for extra entertainment. One of our favorite car games is the alphabet animal game - the first person says an animal that starts with A, second B, etc. This is a super fun way to keep everyone engaged and include your kids in conversation in the car.
How can parents ensure a smooth travel experience?
Planning ahead is crucial for a smooth travel experience with kids. Make sure to pack plenty of snacks, drinks, and extra clothes in case of spills or accidents. Long layovers can be a great way to get some wiggles out, especially if you have a longer flight coming up. We like to make sure the kids go to the bathroom, get some snacks, and walk around a bit before our next flight. The best laid plans still can be derailed, so make sure to pack your patience and flexibility!
What are some tips for dealing with jet lag?
Jet lag can be particularly challenging for kids, disrupting their sleep schedules and causing crankiness. To help minimize the effects of jet lag, try to adjust your child's sleep schedule a few days before the trip. Once you arrive at your destination, encourage outdoor activities and exposure to natural light to help reset their internal clock. Early morning walks while others are still sleeping can be great memory makers as well. We also try to just assimilate with the time difference right away
I hope this provides you with some helpful tips for traveling with young kids and you are ready to make great memories in new places with your family!
